Seeing Like a Border

This presentation considers the role played by automated vision in transforming bodies into “operational images” that enable the expansion of borders into enclosures. It expands on Chris Rumford’s invitation to consider what it might mean to “see like a border”. The resulting form of governance might be described, drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, as the deployment of a granular form of biopower – one that requires the milieu, or environment, to become deformable and customisable. This is the mode of power and control anticipated by those who seek to develop and capture the terrains of augmented and virtual reality – or, in more recent terminology, the realm of the “metaverse.”

Mark Andrejevic ist Professor für Communications and Media Studies an der School of Media, Film, and Journalism an der Monash University (Australien). Er forscht aus einer kritischen medienwissenschaftlichen Perspektive zu Digital Media, Big Data, Data Mining und deren Einflüssen auf Social Justice. Als renommierter Vertreter der Surveillance Studies legt er in seiner Arbeit einen Schwerpunkt auf Fragen der Automatisierung von Überwachungsformen. Andrejevic ist außerdem Chief Investigator am ARC Centre for Automated Decision Making and Society, wo er die sozialen, kulturellen und politischen Auswirkungen von Systemen automatisierter Entscheidungsfindung untersucht. Er ist Autor mehrerer Bücher über digitale Medien und Überwachung, darunter zuletzt (gem. m. Neil Selwyn), Facial Recognition (2022, Polity Press) und Automated Media (2020, Routledge).
